Corrupt and criminal officials, whose fate (the price of their commissions or crimes) depended on the integrity of the judicial system, now have a chance to escape justice, while the hopes of thousands of Nepali victims who have waited decades for justice have been dashed.
The Delicate Balance: The Judiciary and Its Role in Society
This arson attack is not just about a single act of violence, it is symptomatic of a larger crisis of trust in Nepal’s judiciary. The Supreme Court, and indeed the entire judiciary, has long been plagued by allegations of corruption and political interference. The judiciary is increasingly seen as complicit in the failures of the political system. In our country, where corruption is rampant, the judiciary is often accused of turning a blind eye to the excesses of the political elite. Many people no longer saw the courts as fair observers, but as active supporters of a corrupt system.
It is well known that judges and justices, especially in high-profile cases, are susceptible to bribery and political pressure. This has led to a crisis of legitimacy, where many Nepalis view the courts not impartial guardian of justice, but rather as an instrument serving the interests of the political establishment.

Youth must find ways to engage with the political system, challenge corruption and demand accountability without resorting to violence. Social movements must be built on a foundation of constructive engagement, where the goals of reform and change can be achieved through peaceful means, not by destroying institutions that are meant to serve the people.
